A security camera outside, like all cameras, uses an image sensor consisting of several pixels that records the amount light and converts it into a corresponding number of electrons. The brighter the light, electrons are generated. There are two main technologies used for the image sensor of the camera.
The CCD, or charge-coupled device, and CMOS, or Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor are often viewed as competing technologies. However, each did their own strengths and weaknesses, so that it is more appropriate than another depending on demand.
CCD sensors have been developed specifically for the manufacture of CMOS camera while traces its beginnings to the technology standard for use in areas such as memory chips inside the PC. Today, modern CMOS sensors advance in technology and the quality improves dramatically.
A CCD sensor provides a sensitivity a bit more light and produces a less noise than CMOS sensors. Increased sensitivity to light means better image quality in low light conditions.
The disadvantage is that CCD sensors are more expensive and harder to build into a camera. In addition, a CCD sensor uses much more power in some cases, more than 100 times that of the equivalent CMOS sensor.
Recent advances in technology quickly makes the CMOS sensor a rival near the CCD in terms of image quality. CMOS camera is less expensive because CMOS sensors make it easier to build cameras around them.
Relative to the CCDs, CMOS sensors are more flexible integration possibilities and functions and have a quicker read. They require also less energy and require a smaller system. Megapixel CMOS are much more common in the trade-megapixel CCD sensor and much less expensive.
When it comes to megapixel sensors in cameras, the sensors themselves are the same size or only slightly larger than traditional VGA sensor. This means that the size of each pixel is smaller. Thus, while the megapixel camera can offer higher resolution and more detail, there is less light sensitive because the pixel size is smaller and the light reflected from an object is extended more pixels.
