With the number of recalls and warnings issued new drugs recently, the process of FDA approval has been in the news a lot. There have been many cases drugs that cause problems and what the approval means that there has been a series of Supreme Court cases attempting to determine whether manufacturers of various drugs and devices Physicians are responsible for their malfunctioning products or the adverse side effects, as already approved by an independent federal agency.
The process of FDA approval for medical devices such as defibrillators, Medtronic leads, includes everything from ducks to pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. When problems began to surface, people wonder why the Food and Drug Administration tests concerning the drivers did not catch the problems. In this case, the reason is that the evidence was not extensive. When a new product is for approval, the first step in the approval of a medical device is to check that the device is actually a medical device. This may seem obvious, but medical devices as defined by the FDA, include everything from bed pans and tongue depressors in vitro technologies and medical pumps. This classification determines the level of regulatory control necessary to ensure the safety and efficacy of the product. Grading a device also determines the appropriate procedures, the manufacturer or inventor must go through in order to obtain FDA approval for the sale and marketing. The two options for a device are Premarket Notification (510K), or Premarket Approval (PMA).
After the first two steps are completed, the data should be collected and required information must be gathered in order to submit an application for approval. In almost all cases requires clinical performance data. These data should be collected in clinical trials subject to FDA regulations as set out n the research phase brochure Device Exemption.
Finally after all these steps are completed, the FDA must review the request and determine if the device is suitable for use in marketing and the United States.
